A recent ranking* of economics departments by publications in economics journals places the University of Toronto in the top 20 departments worldwide (and 1st in Canada).
A 2014 ranking of the publication records in economics journals of PhD graduates places the University of Toronto in the top 15 departments in the US and Canada. The ranking given in the column headed xth is constructed as follows. For each institution, the publication records of all PhD graduates are ordered and the record at the xth percentile is selected; the institutions are ranked by these selected publication records. Thus, for example, the median (50th percentile) publication record among PhD graduates of Princeton is better than the median publication record among graduates of all other institutions; the median publication record among PhD graduates of the University of Toronto is ranked 9th among all institutions.
